What an exciting weekend that was! Clay, Mat, Elliott, Hannah, Sophie, Catherine, and I journeyed to Deokjeokdo, an island off the west coast of South Korea in the Yellow Sea. It’s one of the little islands near Inchon on this map. The journey there and back was nothing to sniff at. We took the subway toward Seoul then switched trains to head out toward Inchon. We got off at the last stop then took a 10-minute cab ride to the ferry station. We had a bit of a wait before our boat arrived but occupied ourselves with some frisbee throwing in the crowded parking lot. We hit the same car 3 times and disturbed a number of innocent bystanders with errant scoobers, McFlugans, hammers, etc. Our boat finally arrived and we made it to our island (I doubt you can pronounce it, so I won’t bother typing it out) in about an hour. Our motel was still a good distance away so we took another cab and finally we were there!
The island had everything–sandy beaches, majestic mountains, good company, warm weather, cool breezes. For the rest of our day we played on the beach. To prepare for the upcoming LOS season, Clay, Mat, Elliott, and I engaged in a little game we like to call “500″. I won. After an hour or two of that we soaked our bodies in the chilly sea and chased crabs around on the sand. As the sun set in the distance we prepared and consumed large quantities of grilled meat, sliced vegetables, cheese, and various and sundry condiments. Hite, a local brew, was the beverage of choice. Back down to the beach we went to build a towering bonfire. Towering it was–we felled many trees–but fire it was not. No one has plans to quit his day job just yet. Eventually we gave up and joined another group around their less impressive, but much more practical, fire. There were lots of Brits, a smattering of North Carolinians, and an outgoing Texan or two. All in all an interesting group. To be continued…
