Word of the Day

August 15th, 2007 · No Comments

peripatetic - adj 1. of, relating to, or given to walking
2. moving or traveling from place to place : itinerant

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this word uttered in speech. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue for one thing. For another, it has enough synonyms to banish it to the nether realms of esoteric speech and writing. But it would be totally sweet to pick up a triple word score with this guy in Scrabble. Here’s a little brain teaser for you…how many different words can you come up with that you could add letters to the beginning and the end to make “peripatetic” on a Scrabble board (since you can only have seven letters at a time this is the only way the word would come into play anyway). After a cursory examination, I’ve only found one word suitable for embellishment: “pate”.
