Definition: transitive verb 1 : to travel over or through especially on foot : traverse 2 : to make an official inspection of (a boundary) on foot intransitive verb : stroll
Quotation: “As we perambulate the city, it’s grass-grown quays, shaded with trees, and the dull quietude of its slimy canals, have an air of drowsiness and decay.” from The Pilgrim Fathers, Or, Founders of New England in the Reign of James the First by William Henry Bartlett
There’s nothing like a nice-sounding gratuitous synonym for a simple word to show off your vocabulary skills. Perambulate certainly fits in this category. I doubt it gets much common or conversational use anymore.
While looking up this word, I discovered that a baby’s pram is actually a shortening of “perambulator.” Who knew? (Not me)
This word reminds me of a time in college when I was getting ready to watch a UNC game at the Dean Dome. My friends and I had riser tickets so we wanted to make a sign and get on TV. The easiest way to get attention is to make a snazzy acrostic for whatever TV channel is broadcasting the game. ESPN was the network du jour, so after thinking long and hard, I came up with “Every Shot Perambulates Net” for our sign. Unfortunately, my idea never got past the drawing board, so I can only reminisce on what may have been. Oh well.
