Definition: 1 a: a musical composition in which one or two themes are repeated or imitated by successively entering voices and contrapuntally developed in a continuous interweaving of the voice parts b: something that resembles a fugue especially in interweaving repetitive elements
2: a disturbed state of consciousness in which the one affected seems to perform acts in full awareness but upon recovery cannot recollect the acts performed
Quotation: “Christmas is wondrously strange, and not merely because it forces many people to cast themselves out from their houses and wander from movie theaters to Chinese restaurants in some sort of fugue.” - from What Do You Mean, Giving Me That? in The New York Times
While the dual definitions come from totally separate fields, they retain some similarity in the connotation of confusion. I couldn’t find a very good example of the musical version of the word, but reading that definition made me think of the scene in The Big Lebowski where we first meet Maude. It starts off dark with some fugue-ish music filtering in as Maude shoots onto the screen flinging paint and screaming.
