Definition: adj. 1: exuding fragrance : aromatic 2 a: full of a specified fragrance : scented b: evocative, suggestive
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin redolent-, redolens, present participle of redolēre to emit a scent, from re-, red- + olēre to smell
Quotation: “Unlike beer, Sparks’ appeal to young people is enhanced by its sweet citrusy taste, redolent of SweeTarts candy, and the bright color of orange soda.”
- from an article in the CSPI Newsroom
Although Sparks is ruining the lives of countless unsuspecting teens and tweens, it has brought to the fore a good candidate for Word of the Day. I noticed that Merriam-Webster (the definition and etymology source for all WOTD words) listed more specific instances of the word than I am used to, or even knew existed for that matter. I think I have always used the “evocative, suggestive” definition not knowing that it was originally used to describe fragrance.
Special thanks goes to CC for pointing me to the linked article.
